You don't need to learn the math behind it. Just remember one rule:

With Wi-Fi, a number closer to 0 is stronger.

But Where Is the dBm Number?

The normal Windows netsh wlan show interfaces output doesn't give you a clean RSSI in dBm value. It reports signal quality as a percentage.

Windows' Native Wi-Fi API also represents signal quality as a value from 0 to 100. Because of this, you may see people online using a formula to turn the percentage into an estimated dBm value.

That can be useful as a rough estimate, but I wouldn't treat the converted number as a real, precise RSSI reading. Different adapters, drivers, and tools can report wireless strength differently.

Don't treat these ranges as a strict pass-or-fail test. A device at -68 dBm isn't going to suddenly stop working because it crossed some invisible line.

The actual result also depends on interference, channel congestion, the Wi-Fi band, your device, and what you're doing online.

Method 3: Check Your Router

Some routers also show the signal strength of connected devices.

Log in to your router's admin page and look for sections such as:

  • Connected Devices
  • Clients
  • Wireless Clients
  • Wi-Fi Devices
  • Network Map
  • Device Information

Depending on the router, you may see RSSI, signal strength, link rate, channel, or other wireless details.

This can be useful because you're looking at information collected by the router itself. However, not every home router exposes RSSI in its web interface.

How to Read Your dBm Number

Here's the easiest way to think about it.

Imagine dBm as a thermometer, except the scale works backward.

With temperature, a bigger number usually means hotter. With Wi-Fi dBm, -40 is stronger than -70.

Because -40 is closer to zero.

So if you move your laptop closer to the router and the reading changes from -72 dBm → -58 dBm, that's an improvement.

If it changes from -58 dBm → -78 dBm, your signal has become weaker.

What's a Good Wi-Fi Signal?

For normal home use, I'd aim for roughly -50 to -67 dBm wherever you regularly use your laptop or PC.

That's not because -68 suddenly makes Wi-Fi useless. It doesn't.

Think of -67 dBm as a useful target rather than a wall you can't cross. Around -70 dBm can still be perfectly usable for normal tasks, while signals around -80 dBm and below are much more likely to cause trouble.

Again, don't judge your whole connection from this number alone.

A device at -65 dBm can perform badly if the channel is crowded or there's a lot of radio noise. On the other hand, lower Wi-Fi data rates can sometimes work at weaker signal levels than high-speed connections need.

Signal Strength vs Internet Speed

Here's a mistake people make all the time: they assume strong Wi-Fi automatically means fast internet.

Not quite.

Your Wi-Fi signal is the connection between your device and the router.

Your internet speed depends on much more:

Distance is the obvious one, but it's not the only reason.

Walls and other objects can reduce wireless signal strength. Thick concrete, brick, metal, and even certain furniture can make a noticeable difference depending on where they're placed.

  • Thick concrete walls
  • Metal objects near the router
  • Too much distance
  • Crowded Wi-Fi channels
  • Neighboring routers
  • Poor router placement
  • Interference from other devices
  • Weak Wi-Fi adapter

This is why moving the router even a few feet can sometimes make a surprisingly big difference.

The Best Trick: Walk Around Your Home

Here's the trick I'd actually recommend instead of standing beside the router and declaring victory.

Measure the signal where you actually use Wi-Fi.

  1. Check next to the router.
  2. Check your bedroom.
  3. Check your work or study area.
  4. Check the kitchen.
  5. Check the balcony or terrace.
  6. Check any room where Wi-Fi regularly drops.

Now you have something much more useful than "my Wi-Fi has two bars."

You can see exactly where the signal starts falling apart.

Check Both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz

If your router has both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, don't assume one is always better.

The 2.4 GHz band generally travels farther and passes through obstacles better, while 5 GHz can offer higher performance but usually has a shorter practical range.

That's why you might see 2.4 GHz: -58 dBm and 5 GHz: -70 dBm from the same room.

In that location, the 2.4 GHz connection may have the stronger signal.

But stronger signal doesn't automatically mean faster. Channel width, congestion, Wi-Fi generation, and the negotiated link rate still matter.

What About Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7?

The same basic idea applies to newer Wi-Fi bands.

Wi-Fi 6E adds the 6 GHz band, while Wi-Fi 7 can also use 6 GHz where supported. Higher-frequency bands can be more sensitive to walls and distance, so don't be surprised if your 6 GHz signal drops faster as you move away from the router.

Instead of guessing which band is better from the Wi-Fi icon, you can measure both.

Check Signal Strength and Channel Together

If your signal is strong but your Wi-Fi is still slow, don't immediately buy a new router. Check the channel.

The goal isn't the biggest number. The goal is stable coverage where you need it.

What If the Signal Is Strong but Wi-Fi Is Still Slow?

If you're getting something like -45 dBm but your speed is terrible, your signal probably isn't the first thing I'd blame.

Check these next:

  • Run an internet speed test.
  • Check your Wi-Fi channel.
  • Compare 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz.
  • Check the negotiated receive/transmit rate.
  • Test another device in the same location.
  • Restart the router.
  • Check for router firmware updates.
  • Test with Ethernet if possible.

The Bottom Line

If you want to quickly check your Wi-Fi strength on Windows, run:

netsh wlan show interfaces

You'll get a Signal percentage, which is useful for a quick check.

But if your goal is specifically to see Wi-Fi signal strength in dBm, use a Wi-Fi analyzer that reports RSSI in dBm. That's the better choice when you're diagnosing weak coverage, comparing rooms, checking different Wi-Fi bands, or deciding where to place a router.

And remember the golden rule: -50 dBm is stronger than -70 dBm.

If you're around -55 to -67 dBm, you're generally in a good place. Around -70 dBm, things can still work fine for normal use. Once you're getting near -80 dBm or worse, it's time to investigate your router placement, walls, interference, or coverage.

Most importantly, don't judge Wi-Fi by bars alone. Bars are like a quick weather forecast; dBm gives you the actual thermometer.
